Katherine Pope Obituary

Poland – A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, February 28, at 11:00 am at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Katherine “Kathy” Pope, 81, who passed away peacefully Friday, February 23, at the Assumption Village surrounded by her family.

Kathy was born February 7, 1943, in Youngstown a daughter of John and Katherine Rohman D’Angelo and was raised in Struthers.  She graduated Cardinal Mooney High School in 1960 and YSU with a BS in education in 1964, and then attended graduate school in the field of special education. She married John R. Pope on July 18, 1964.  Kathy taught throughout the Mahoning County area at West Branch, Austintown, Poland, Struthers, Youngstown and Springfield schools.  Besides teaching, she had her real estate license, was a travel consultant, and escorted educational trips throughout Europe and Latin America.

Kathy was very active in the community.  She was a Supreme Emblem Club of the U.S. officer, Ohio State Emblem Club officer and scholarship committee, and Youngstown Emblem Club 471 and was President for two terms and developed a Scholarship Award and headed the committee.  Kathy volunteered at St. Elizabeth Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the St. Elizabeth Hospital gift shop, at the Relay for Life in Boardman and Springfield,  at the Second Harvest Food Bank, and Hospice of the Valley.  She was a member of the Youngstown Panhellenic and Youngstown Coursillo . She served as a judge for History Day at YSU for two years. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New Middletown and served as a Eucharistic minister and Silas Marner. She enjoyed sailing, plays, trivia, reading, traveling and most anything, including being the “HIT”.  Kathy always said, “All of this means nothing – only my family – kids and grandkids mean everything!”

Kathy is watching over her beloved family.  She leaves her daughters Juliet (Dr. Chris) Economus of Poland and Kae (Scott) Grdina of New Middletown, two sisters Joan Chizmar of New Port Richey, FL, and Laura (Melanie Harvey) D’Angelo of Palm Harbor, FL, and a brother John (Judy)  D’Angelo of Wickliff, OH, six grandchildren Sylvia Grdina, Emily (Jonathan) Elias, Ian Grdina, and  Doctor Christopher Economus, Paul and Grace Economus, and two great granddaughters, Madeline and Lillian. Kathy was extraordinarily proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John.

Kathy’s family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Assumption Village and Hospice of the Valley who took care of Kathy’s needs during her illness.

Kathy encourages everyone who knew her not to grieve her passing from this life to the next, but to rejoice! Her family extends an invitation to celebrate her life with her family prior to the Memorial Mass on Wednesday from 9:45 am to 10:45 am on February 28, at St. Paul the Apostle Church at 10143 Main Street in New Middletown, 44442.
